WHAT IS DBS?

DBS stands for Deep Brain Stimulation, a technique widely used to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor or dystonia. An electrode is implanted in each hemisphere of the brain at the level of the diseased nucleus. This electrode is connected to the neurostimulator, which is located in the chest or the abdomen. The neurostimulator sends out electrical pulses that can restore the activity of the diseased brain nucleus. DBS treats symptoms of a disease and is not a cure.

MATERIAL

Through a small burr hole in the skull, the electrode is implanted in the brain (about 7cm deep). The electrode connects under the scalp to a connecting cable that runs behind the ear. The neurosurgeon connects this cable to the neurostimulator, which is located in the chest or in the abdomen. The neurostimulator sends the electrical pulses with a battery that is either non-rechargeable (life span 3-5years) or rechargeable (life span 25years). A rechargeable battery should be recharged weekly for one hour.

THE IMPACT OF DBS ON YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES

DBS will increase your independence, which will decrease your need for help therefore also impact your relationship with your partner and/or close family. Some people may experience limited changes in character: more impulsivity, or more apathetic. Major changes in character (strong urge for shopping, major change in sexual drive or sudden onset of depression) are rare and should always be discussed with your doctor as they can usually be reversed by adjusting the stimulation parameters.
